A woven textile (woven fabric) consists of a system of warp threads (longitudinal direction) and weft threads (transverse direction) which are systematically crossed with each other. A weave is determined by the crossing pattern of warp and weft threads to be repeated in order to obtain a specific weave pattern.⁠ A herringbone weave is based on a twill weave, the zigzag pattern of the herringbone is created by a change in direction from the Z to the S ridge in the weave.

Ein gewebtes Textil (Webware) besteht aus einem System aus Kettfäden (Längsrichtung) und Schussfäden (Querrichtung) die systematisch miteinander verkreuzt sind. Die Art der Verkreuzung nennt man Bindung. Eine Bindung wird durch ihren Rapport bestimmt, dieser bezeichnet das zu wiederholende Verkreuzungsschema von Kett- und Schussfäden, um ein bestimmtes Bindungsmuster zu erhalten. Eine Fischgratbindung beruht auf einer Köperbindung, die zickzackartige Musterung des Fischgrats entsteht durch einen Richtungswechsel vom Z- zum S-Grat in der Bindung.
